were has she gone

I know people, I know…
I haven’t been posting lately and I’m hanging my head in shame, but sometimes reality takes over, things have to be taken care of and time isn’t on your side.
Well, time hasn’t been on my side for a while now and reading became a luxury where I can only dream of.
The worst is over though and you will soon see my reviews popping up again.

Thanks for your patience.

sterrenmeisje has grown up…

Hi,

Maybe you already noticed, but I have a new domain for all my book reviews: the other book review. I thought it was time to leave sterrenmeisje behind for my reviews, they deserve a place of their own, with a name that already explained what is happening on my site, without a big questionmark as to what sterrenmeisje means.

So if you happened to have my reviews site bookmarked, please change it in your favorites.

heaven…here i am

One of my dreams is working in or owning a book store. What pleasure it would be to work between books, to see thousands on shelves, to see them all new and I would be the first one to take a peak.

Well, my dream came true last week. As of last Tuesday I work at The American Book Center. It is a book shop here in The Netherlands, that only sells British and American books (and magazines). I’m just ecstatic!

buying spur

As though I hadn’t enough books already I bought some the last couple of weeks.
I’m trying to get the complete set of books of some of my favorite authors: Clyde Edgerton, Mick Jackson, Magnus Mills. I think I have read enough of those guys to know I won’t be disappointed. So, here is what I got:

Lunch at the Piccadilly – Clyde Edgerton

Solo – Clyde Edgerton

Redeye; a western – Clyde Edegrton

The underground man – Mick Jackson

Five boys – Mick Jackson

mick jackson tells animated tales

tensorrytalesAs all of you can see in the sidebar, I’m currently reading Ten sorry tales by Mick Jackson. Actually it is a re-read. The first time I read it, I saw the book in the store and just had to have it because of the cover. (In one of my other posts I talked about that ’strange’ habit.) I persuaded my boyfriend to give me that book for Christmas and he did, the dear. I am really grateful, because I was so impressed by the ten short stories then, that I’m now using them, amongst other work and authors, for my PhD thesis about animation and humor (in films as well as books).
I think these short stories are very near to animation – to an animated film. In his writing you surely see the influences of him being a film maker. Through his writing it is easy to get a picture of what he wants us (readers) to see. His style is short and compact and every sentence is there for a reason. A lot of things Jackson leaves open for us to interpret and fantasize about, by leaving some information in the dark. For example the time things happen in. Is it past, present or future? Another thing is the characters; they are 1-dimensional, they have one particular quality on which is zoomed in. The rest is for us to fill in. I’m currently busy with describing the different methods Jackson uses in his style to make the stories animated and humorous. Very interesting!
But enough about my ‘professional’ dealings with this book. It is just a great read.

my updated blog

As many of you probably have noticed already, I have been busy the last couple of weeks to get all my written book reviews here at my blog. No more links to my other (extern) site anymore, but the complete review immediately for you to read. What a treat!

The easiest way to see what reviews I have written, is going to the page all the titles reviewed or the page all the authors reviewed. You can also click on reviews or find your specific genre in the category cloud.

my books & i are back

Well, ten days can go fast! I’m back from my vacation in Germany and had a great time.

It didn’t take me too long to figure out, when I was in Köln, that the books are a lot cheaper in Germany than they are here in The Netherlands. So, well, what can I say…I couldn’t contain myself and bought thirteen books. And when you think that is crazy, just keep in mind my boyfriend bought around three times as many. So who is crazy (about books) now! Okay, I admit, I am too!!
