Not as good as Rachel’s holiday, but good enough non the less.

Lisa is send from London to Dublin to set up a new Women’s magazine Colleen. Lisa is used to her glamorous lifestyle, something she has to give up in Ireland so it seems. Ashling is her “second in command” with her own set of problems. She is very insecure about her lack of waist, her lack of brilliant ideas and her lack of self esteem. Clodagh is Ashling’s best friend, married, two kids, in a total dip and wanting something completely different in her life. Jack is Lisa’s and Ashling’s boss, having problems in his relationship with a finger biting Asian girlfriend.

So, there are a couple of main characters in this book, Lisa, Ashling, Jack, Clodagh and some other characters, which are getting some sort, any kind, of relationship with each other around page 100. That was when the book started to grab me and didn’t let go anymore. And although the outcome of the book (like all Keyes’ books) was apparent after the first few chapters, still the book had some surprising twists and disturbing reality to it.

I have to say in all honesty it is a real “women’s” book. That said, it is also a very funny book.

Maggie Garvan (Walsh) just found out her husband has an affair with “Truffle woman”. In her anger she sets off to LA, Hollywood to “take some down time” at her best friend Emily, a scriptwriter waiting for her big break. In the month she is there all sorts of crazy stuff happens. Trying to fit in the LA lifestyle she gets herself in the weirdest situations helped by some of the strangest people. All through her stay the question remains: is she ever getting back with her husband Paul Garvan (Garv for short).

Well, this book is not one of the finest literature written, but that is not the intention. It is a great story for everybody who wants to have an easy read and get a good laugh. I think that is the only pretension the book has and it’s enough for me!

Rachel is the middle sister/daughter of five, 26 years old. She is Irish, living in New York with her friend Brigit for the past couple of years, recently trying to have a meaningful relationship with Luke, one of the “Real Men” (how awful!). So, her life is very normal, except for the fact she is a drug addict. Everybody says so, but herself. Still, she is sent to a treatment center what she sees as a holiday with bubble baths, massages and lots of famous people. Was she wrong!

The situations described are 100% entertainment and/but, I’m afraid to say, recognizable. The way Rachel thinks and does is weird and still you can think of doing it yourself that way. (Or maybe that’s just me.)

The book is not just funny, but laugh out loud hilarious. What did it for me, is the choice of words and the style of writing. Marian Keyes proves she is one of the best in her genre.
