When you see the title you would think you’re in for a thriller/horror type of story, but you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a very gripping and disturbing story about five teenage sisters who commit suicide. Heavy stuff? Not really. The way the story is told is very open and factual, even funny at times, by one of the boys (now men) who lived in the street and who were intrigued by the Lisbon girls and their lives.

The time the tragedy unravels is the seventies, a time so much change was already going on. Eugenides is a great storyteller, has eye for detail. Once you enter the lives of the Lisbon sisters you get obsessed with them too, just like the boys in the book. Very overpowering.

In this book everything is hang up on one term: intertextuality.
Mrs. Dalloway is the subject/object that is the intermediate between three women, three, as it seems at first, totally different and incoherent lives. There is Virginia Woolf, who is writing Mrs Dalloway, struggling with her story. There is Laura Brown, who is reading Mrs Dalloway and Clarissa who is the late ’90 version of Mrs Dalloway. Every woman has her own struggles and doubts. We, the readers, are given a look in their worlds, their emotions, thoughts and eventually their decisions.

It’ s a story about live and death, or better yet, about the decision to live or to die.

Telling anything else is giving the story away, because everything has to do with everything else. Just read this one for yourself!

Fanny Price, a young woman who is taken away from her family at the age of ten and brought up by her rich aunt and uncle. She learns manners, how to behave in certain circles. The only real friend in her ordeal is her cousin Edmund, who gives her paper and feather to write, and later on her uncle gives her a fair chance too, by giving her a lovely fire (and so warmth) in “her” library. I really haven’t got a clue what more to tell . It’s just a romantic story about a very dull young woman. All is well that ends well. But I’m not finished yet…

My first rule of fiction: create a hero/heroin that acts. Jane Austen fails miserable with Fanny Price. Everything happens to her, nothing is done by her own actions and still she gets everything her heart desires. She has no flaws, no weaknesses and still she is considered a loveable little creature. How is that possible? And how is it possible that despite all of this I still give ?
Here is why: the elegance and drawn back nature of Fanny Price is reflected in the writing of Jane Austen. That makes this book a pleasure to read. That and the fact I’m just a sucker for romantic fiction.

A very uncomplicated and amusing play. This play has everything a good classic play should have: characters with secrets, a situation that starts easy but spins out of control in no time, love interests, confusion of tongues, little fights, a moral and a happy ending.

The characters with secrets are John/Jack and Algernon. The love interests are Lane and Cecily. The situation is John wanting to marry Cecily, but she only wants to marry an Earnest. The confusion is in all the names the characters have. The fight is between Algernon and John. The moral is: be yourself and truthful and the happy ending…well, I think I don’t have to say anything about that.

Read and enjoy!

A nice little story told in journal form. Cassandra is the one who is telling the story about her life and love(s).

She lives in a castle where also live: her strange father, stepmother Topaz, sister Rose, brother Thomas and help Stephen. When the family of which they rent the castle, comes to England (from the USA) the story really sets of. Two young men, Simon and Neil, belong to that family and steal the harts of Rose and Cassandra with whom Stephen is hopelessly in love.

Enough romance for a book full intrigues and troubles of all sorts. The story is told with humor and great spirit. If you like romance you should try this book.

The book started promising. You get to know the characters and you think the rest will be a good story about these people in a small American town. In a way you get what you thought, but not entirely. For one, I never really got to know the characters, they didn’t move me in any way. Second, I never got in the different storylines and the story as a whole. The story didn’t sweep me away from my own living room into the world created. Third, there is always a time and place for different subjects. So when this book started to give me political and social standards between North and South and black and white, my lust for reading decreased with every word I read. No subtleties there and I think the way it is brought to us here, doesn’t belong in a fiction book. The storyline of Mick Kelly, a twelve year old girl, is interesting enough, with her way of experiencing the world and the people around her, but the storyline of doctor Copeland and Portia, I really didn’t like because of the political nature. The other storylines, of Mr. Singer, Biff Brannon and Jake Blount were good enough at times to keep me going, but I still can’t be enthusiastic about the book. It didn’t affect me like I expect a good read to do. I only registered what I read, but couldn’t make a world out of it.

It’s a story of loss of innocence, a loss of self and a loss of life. So what should have been a brilliant story is, for me, nothing more than a book I tried to get through as quick as possible so I could start a new book.

Although the book is about football, football and football Hornby’s style of writing drew me to the book repeatedly. With his choice of words, his distinctive (English) humor he gets to me every time.

At times he is really funny, but at other times he can be serious about things happening in the (soccer-)world, like discrimination of players and deaths as a result of vandalism. This makes the book more than just an easy tribute to the game.

I enjoyed myself reading it.

Thomas Fowler and Alden Pyle are friends against their will in a time of war. Fowler is a British journalist who won’t take sides and Pyle is “the quiet American” with his own agenda who seems like a young and naive man.
At the beginning of the book Fowler learns that Pyle is dead. The rest of the book is the time that Fowler and Pyle knew each other, told by Fowler. We get to know how they met, how Pyle takes Fowler’s girl Phuong, how Pyle saves Fowler from being killed and how (besides all this) they are destined to get to know each other.

It seems like a rather easy story and it is written that way, but when you read closer you’ll see parallels between different storylines, you’ll see how people (have to) behave in wartime and you’ll see how in the end Fowler has to take sides and how hard it is for him, because he knows that when you takes sides you automatically affect other lives and that is exactly what he does. Now he has to live with it.

It is a very good book, but it becomes that book when you read it more then once I think. Very interesting.

Rebecca is the first wife of Maxim de Winter. She lived at Manderley. She is dead, but she is still around as the second wife can and will confirm.
The story is told from the point of view of the second wife after all that has happened; from the first day she met Max until the last day at Manderley. That fact gives an extra dimension to the story. Not only do we see what happens, we see what happens through the eyes of someone who has already lived it and has knowledge of things and feelings she couldn’t have during the period of which she tells.

It is an impressive story. Du Maurier knows how to create an atmosphere that is ominous, obscure but lovely at the same time, and she does it with the greatest ease and the littlest of means.

A very good read indeed!
