Although the book is about football, football and football Hornby’s style of writing drew me to the book repeatedly. With his choice of words, his distinctive (English) humor he gets to me every time.

At times he is really funny, but at other times he can be serious about things happening in the (soccer-)world, like discrimination of players and deaths as a result of vandalism. This makes the book more than just an easy tribute to the game.

I enjoyed myself reading it.

If you want to get an idea of the life of a 35 years old man in London, then this humoristic book is one for you to read. You get a good look inside the head of Rob Fleming, a music store owner who wants to get more out of his life than what he is getting at the moment. He has two employees who he calls friends, and a girlfriend who just left him. He thought until now he had it “all”, he was content at least, but after Laura leaving he gets to see himself as he really is: a boy growing older, but not realizing that. Hence a lot of brainstorming, soul-searching and emotions and fantasies running wild. In the end everything falls into place but first he has to:
* sleep with an American singer,
* discover Laura sleeps with the “man next door”, which by the way Rob and Laura heard having sex on several occasions,
* go to his parents, confronted with the fact that they have a better and fuller life than he does,
* get in contact with the five ex-girlfriends who hurt him the most, only to realize he is better of than he expected,
* go to a funeral, making an ass of himself (although he doesn’t need a funeral for that).
After all that he only has to do one thing right: making his life worth living together with Laura! Will he make that happen?

So, if you want to laugh (out loud) and have a really good read at the same time, you should pick up this book: a revelation and a better understanding of men for women and a confirmation for men; you’re not the only one thinking what you’re thinking!

This one is about two boys: one boy age 12, Marcus and one boy age 36, Will. Both have to grow up and they need each others help to do so.

Marcus without the gift to understand the humor Will uses on him, throws himself at Will after the Dead Duck Day; the day he kills a duck with a piece of bread and the day his mother tries to kill herself. Will hasn’t a clue what to do with Marcus when he appears at Will’s doorstep uninvited every day after school, sometimes followed by bullies. Will can’t get rid of him, so maybe give up and go along with him might do the trick to lose Marcus in the end. However things work out differently. In the time spent together Will teaches Marcus to be “cool” and Marcus teaches Will to care.
