Dexter Morgan is, on the outside a lovable creature. He is handsome, well behaved, has a good job as an analyst with the police and has sort of a girlfriend. He could be as normal as a person is able to. But he is not. He has a dark side, a very dark side: his Dark Passenger. And this passenger is a serial killer, without emotions and feelings. But it’s also a picky serial killer because he only kills other murderers. That’s what Dexter been thought by his foster dad Harry, a policeman. Dexter has to abide Harry’s rules to keep himself out of trouble and to look as human as he can.
But trouble he is in: another serial killer is on the loose and along the way Dexter notices the killer is making it personal, too personal!

I knew the series before I read this book and I love the series so I was a bit worried about how I would perceive this story. I shouldn’t have worried, because the book is great. The atmosphere is eerie, the characters all believable and with depth and the (dark) comedy Lindsay put in makes you laugh out loud more than once. So, even if you know the series you can easily pick up this book for a great ride a la Dexter.

In a not too distant future, being f*t (read fat) is illegal. Laws to imprison people who have a too high percentage of body f*t have been made and a Health Enforcement team is working the streets of New York to spot anyone who is overweight (‘humonsters’). Matt Devlin is one of the agents working for this team, and he’s content writing out tickets for f*t people. But his routine is shattered when a dead body is found near an illegal ‘eateasy’; the body only wearing a bikini of the best, rarest and purest chocolate (‘brown’). And of course chocolate is an illegal substance to posses and eat. So, the question that arises is this: Who’s crime is this…is it a case for homicide or the mellow Health Enforcement? Or can both apartments work this case together?…f*t chance!

Although I give this book only two stars, I don’t want to give it the tag ‘don’t bother’, because I think this book has something to offer for some people. And I have given the book the tag ‘humor’, although for me this wasn’t entirely true. But still, I do see the attraction of the book, it just wasn’t for me. I think for me the problem is that the book/story takes itself too seriously. You can make a satire on the current society and culture, but then you have to take it to extremes to make it really work. And although it is absurd that being f*t is illegal, it wasn’t far-fetched enough, for me anyway.

Jaine Austen (yes, her “mother is an Anglophile, and a bad speller”) has her own writing service and one day she has to write a letter for geeky Howard, who wants to ask a blonde female fitness instructor named Stacy for a date. Jaine is a bit reluctant to write it, but in the end, does what is asked by her client — money had a big influence in that decision. She had better gone with her instinct to refuse him, because next thing she knows, Howard is in prison, arrested for the murder of Stacy.
Jaine is 100% sure, Howard isn’t the culprit. The only thing she has to do now is prove her female intuition is right. Something that easier said than done.

I expected a really nice read, but didn’t get it. Just before reading this one, I read Three bedrooms, one corpse by Charlaine Harris and what I was afraid of that would happen in the plot didn’t. Unfortunately, in the story of Jaine Austen it did. -show spoiler

The love interest of the main character is the killer.

This twist of the plot is what makes me apprehensive of these kind of chick-lit mysteries. A real shame Laura Levine only confirmed that feeling.

Aurora (Roe) Teagarden gave up her work as librarian when she unexpectedly inherited a house and money. She decided to give the real estate business a chance. After all, her mother is one of the most successful agents in town. It should give Roe a head start. Well…it gives Roe a start, but not the start she wanted, for her first house showing ends with a naked corpse in the master bedroom. Not the way Roe hoped her new career would take off and to make matters worse, one of her new-found colleagues has fallen under suspicion.
Time to jump into action. Roe, the natural-born sleuth, will not have piece until she has unraveled this mystery.

I really enjoyed this little charming detective story. The plot is not too obvious and there are enough comic notes to have you laughing throughout the story. I recently acquired the knowledge of this being book three in a series and it will not be long before you will read another review of the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries.

Israel Armstrong, the reluctant librarian in Northern Ireland is back for a new adventure. We have met Israel in the case of the missing books, but now the books are all save and sound in the van aka the mobile library. What (or better who) is missing this time is Mr Dixon, an influential department store owner. He vanishes right under Israel’s nose and when Israel is found at the ‘crime scene’ he is even arrested as a suspect of harming and kidnapping Mr Dixon. This unjust treatment to make him the obvious culprit makes Israel more determent to catch the real offender. Well.…determent.…Israel has to find him really, otherwise he himself will end up in the jail cell again. So, another job for our ‘hero’.

Just as the previous book, this story has enough pace and humor to keep you smiling throughout the whole book. An easy and fun read.

Dirk Gently is a detective, but not some ordinary detective. He seeks answers in the fact that things are connected with each other in an almost unexplainable way, a metaphysical way, or as Dirk says it: in an holistic way. So try to explain how these following components fit together in one story: a missing cat, two ghosts, a dodo, an Electric Monk, a professor, an ex university student, a greedy detective, detecting and triangulating vectors of interconnectedness of all things and the saving of the human race from total extinction. It’s a tough job, even for Dirk together with his college mate Richard, but hey, somebody has to do it.

Douglas Adams knows how to entertain people with the right mixture of humour, (science) fiction and philosophy. If you liked The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy, you certainly going to appreciate this one too.

Israel Armstrong has just completely changed his life. He has given up his big town life of London for a job as a librarian in the Northern Ireland’s town Tumdrum. The only problem is…the library has closed. Well that is that then, he can go home again. Not really that bad, considering Israel regretted the undertaking as soon as he begun it and missing his girlfriend Gloria back home. But no, things has to go different for him of course.
The library has closed but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a mobile library van available. He has to drive to middles of nowhere to give his services to the community. And hence, a new problem arrises: no books for the van. All the books (fifteenthousand of them) have been stolen.
After many ‘aye’, ‘ach’ and buts Israel agrees to look for them, if he, when all the books are found, can go back to England. His boss Linda is okay with that.
So the hunt is on and a new reluctant detective is born.

The first book in The mobile library detective series. I was drawn to the book because of its (UK) cover and now that I’ve read it, I’m glad I was. It is a really fun story to read. Nothing too heavy, nothing to hard. Nice and enjoyable characters; they really grow on you. A book that gives you a good feeling reading it and leaves you with the all important question: what will happen next!?
