Jeeves is the gentleman’s gentleman of Bertie Wooster and a genius in creating good ideas in troublesome situations. Not a bad quality for a butler with an employer called Wooster, because when Wooster isn’t in trouble a friend of his is and Wooster always wants to help his friends, no matter how bad the situation.

This first Jeeves book has ten stories in which Jeeves saves the day. The first nine are written by Bertie, the last one by Jeeves. The stories are fun enough to read, but after the first four or five, you will get a sense of deja vu. Every story is build (up) the same way: Wooster is at home, a friend is in trouble, Jeeves comes up with a great idea, that idea turns bad, so Jeeves comes with a second plan and saves the day after all. All stories are written with a good sense of wit and humor, I loved the writing style, but after ten stories I still had enough for a while. I think, from now one, I will read one Jeeves book per year, to keep it fun.

Just like in Me talk pretty one day Sedaris has bundled some of his (family) stories. Every aspect of family (life), discovering yourself and the ones around you, knowing how to handle your parents and siblings, is being investigated and written down in a hilarious, original and readable way.

In my last post I already told about this book and how I liked it. Well, now I’ve read all the ten stories and I’m sticking with my earlier judgement: a great set of stories full of imagination and wonderful telling.

All you need to have is an open mind and you’re all set for a good time.

This book contains of short chapters, each telling us a situation or an episode out of Sedaris’ life. Well, you may expect this book autobiographical, because he uses his real name for his character and he tells his stories in such a way, he must have lived them. The episodes are not told chronological but in a way the brain works with memories; then this one jumps up, then another one, totally random. One chapter you learn about how David in his twenties is a cool artist with his own exhibitions, the next chapter David is telling about all the dogs they had at home when he was a child.

All this telling is managed in such a humorous, up beat, quick and (seemingly) easy way, you just have to keep reading once you’ve begun. Some of the chapters are laughing out loud funny, others are humorous but also very true, and that is what makes this book worth a read.

Good bones is a collection of short stories; some very funny, some more serious.

I really enjoyed the first five or six stories, after that it was a bit downhill for me, nonetheless they were still good.
The subjects vary from a interior monologue from Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother — why all went wry -, to a plea for all the wicked stepmothers and ugly stepsisters out there in the world called fairytale — they are highly misunderstood-, to descriptions of humans and their planet by other life.
