chocolat — joanne harris

3 stars

Vianne Rocher and her daughter Anouk come to a little town in France. Vianne opens a chocolate store opposite the church. Vianne is seen as a danger to many people in the village, especially Father Reynaud, but there are some more open-minded people as well that embrace her and her very special sweets. With Vianne a new “wind” blows through the village, the chocolate store as the “center of the hurricane”. Now, the people have a place to meet and talk about everything. Because of the special gift Vianne has, some people dare to dream, stand up for themselves.
When there is a plan for a chocolate festival on Easter Sunday the town divides into two camps: it’s “church or chocolate”. Who will win?

educating rita — willy russell

A story about an older teacher and a young hairdresser taking classes.

Rita is a working-class girl wanting to learn literature. Frank is the teacher who is most of the time drunk and in need of some money. So he reluctantly takes on a student from Open University. What they both don’t think is that they have something in common, but after a few weeks they can appreciate each others point of view and they even learn from each other: Rita learns to make choices for herself and Frank learns that the world doesn’t only exist out of literature.

starter for ten — david nicholls

Brian Jackson is a nineteen year old man, well boy actually, going in his first year of college. He has a few goals he wants to achieve there: being on University Challenge, reading and learning a lot and of course getting the prettiest girl on campus. The fact that Brian is a twat doesn’t make it easy to achieve those goals, but it doesn’t effect his effort to do what he is set out to do.
So, audition for University Challenge: not going too well. Will he make it on the show eventually where he can impress his friends and family?
The girl? Well, is that Alice or Rebecca? With both he has great times, with both he can’t help being himself. Which girl can handle him the best?
And then last but not least: reading and learning a lot. Let’s skip that goal completely. Or does he learn the most valuable lessons around: the life lessons?

cannery row — john steinbeck

Although there are quit a few characters in this story the two main characters for me were Doc and Mack. They both have some depth, some insight the others don’t have.

The story starts with Lee Chong. Through his grocery store the reader is drawn into the little town full of ordinary and not so ordinary people. A real story/plot is not found in this tale, it is more a description of situations and the people involved.

Non the less good writing and a good read.
