
Gabriel is a data thief. Together with his friend he hacks computers, security systems etc. to get the information he needs for his multiple employers. He is happy with who he is and what he does. And then a certain man named mr. Whittington contacts him with a question: would Gabriel be interested in finding his son, who disappeared some time ago. Gabriel is puzzled why Whittington should come to him, but after he learns his former girlfriend Frankie is the wife of Whittington, and therefor he knows something about Gabriel, a secret ability, that would be helpful in this case, Gabriel reluctantly agrees to look into it. His path leads to two beautiful sisters with unknown powers and that is the start of a very intriguing and thrilling journey.

Just like in his book Midnight in the garden of good and evil John Berendt gives us an impression of a city and its population. This time he picked Venice.
In 1996 the Fenice, opera house of Venice, is burnt to the ground. Berendt hears of this and sets his sails to Italy. In Venice he speaks with people who heard and saw the Fenice in flames and he is very intruiged with their stories. Who set the Fenice on fire and why does it take almost ten years to get the opera house built again?

Guy Montag is a fireman; not a fireman that extinguishes fires, but one that ignites them. He lives in a time (somewhere in the future) when having books is illegal. When the people who own them are found out, the fire brigade is being called to burn down the house together with the books. Guy is happy with his job until on one call a woman refuses to leave her books and burns together with them. On that occasion Guy grabs a book with him; there must be something in books if people don’t want to leave them even when that means their death. From that moment on his entire life turns upside down and he has to make some difficult choices and decisions.
